Our stretch of the Whanganui River is well known for some of the best trout fishing in the world. Taumarunui hosted the 2020 Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships and the 2009 World Fly Fishing Championships among others.

Whether you’re a novice or an experienced angler, we can tailor a fishing trip to your requirements.  Join our fly fishing guide, previous NZ champion Peter Scott, for expert tuition at secret fishing spots known only by the locals and experience the moods of our river as it runs through bush blocks and farmland. Or for the more experienced angler, choose a trip into absolute wilderness to the headwaters.

Fly Fishing by Jet Boat

Enjoy a full-day Jet Boat and Fly Fishing expedition on the Whanganui River – home to the World Fly Fishing Championships. Whether you’re an experienced angler or you’ve never fished before, this is a unique and exhilarating way of fishing for the truly adventurous! Our Jet Boat will zoom you down-river through whitewater rapids and into the remote reaches of Te Awa Tupua, the only river in Aotearoa to be legally recognised as a person. You’ll get to know the special secrets and moods of our beautiful river as you stop at remote, untouched fishing spots accessible only by boat. NZ fly-fishing champion Peter Scott, a former member of our national Fly Fishing Team the “Silver Flies” will provide expert tuition and share with you the tips and tricks of his success. Fly Fishing Luxury Package

The total wilderness angler’s experience, from the comfort of luxury accommodation at Mahoe Lodge ‘Waipiata’. Three days guided on the best fly fishing river in the world, the Whanganui River, home to the World Fly Fishing Championships. Travel in by jet boat to access secret fishing spots in the remote reaches of Te Awa Tupua, the only river in Aotearoa to be legally recognised as a person due to it’s importance to the Maori people. Fly-fishing champion Peter Scott, a former member of the NZ Fly Fishing Team the “Silver Flies”, will be your expert guide for one day fishing from the jet boat and 2 days of wilderness headwater fishing.
